Elk Camp Fuel Break Project
As part of the 2,083-acre Gasquet Community Protection Project, the 225-acre Elk Camp Fuelbreak Maintenance Project east of the town of Gasquet was completed on Thursday, July 14th, 2022.
The project included cutting ladder fuels such as dead woody material, brush, small diameter seedling and sapling trees, pruning lower limbs of overstory trees, and hand
piling the cut materials.
The Elk Camp Fuel Break is critical to protect the community of Gasquet from wildland fires, and the continued maintenance of this project preserves the work done for the at-risk community of Gasquet. Pile burning for this project will start after the fire season ends and wet weather conditions return.
Update April 14th, 2023
124 acres have been burnt, over half of the 225 acres.

Before and After
This is an example of the fuel loads cut out of the Elk Camp Project Area. This will not only help protect the east side of Gasquet but will also help maintain forest health. Burning of piles will begin after the fire season ends and wet weather conditions return.
Gordon Hill #1
Final work on the 110 acre Gordon Hill #1 project is complete. Chipping and lop and scatter were used to treat this area with LG Forestry.
This section included critical infrastructure including the Camp Six Communication Towers.
It also creates a fuel break to help protect both Gasquet, Rock Creek, and Big Flat.

Gordon Hill Tolowa
Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation has begun work on 200 acres along French Hill Road. Much of this is in an old burn scar and is very tedious, exposed, steep, and difficult to remove.
