The mission of the Del Norte Prescribed Burn Association is to build local capacity for the safe and effective use of prescribed and beneficial fire through cooperative burning, education and training, landowner assistance, active land stewardship and management, ecological restoration, and partnerships that reduce wildfire risk, protect communities, and restore healthy, fire-adapted landscapes.

When​

Prescribed fire depends on the right conditions. Burn dates are determined by weather, fuel conditions, smoke management requirements, permits, available personnel, equipment, and other resources needed to conduct the burn safely. Registered participants will receive burn announcements and meet-up details by email. Burn opportunities may be announced on short notice.

What to Bring

For field events, participants should generally bring:

​

  • Sturdy boots

  • Natural fiber or Nomex long sleeves and long pants

  • Leather gloves

  • Eye protection

  • Water, snacks, and lunch

Learning Opportunities

  • ​​Prescribed fire safety and basic fire behavior

  • Burn preparation and unit organization

  • Pile and broadcast burning

  • Ignition, holding, and patrol

  • Weather and fuel conditions

  • Restoring healthy fire to local landscapes

  • Planning, permits, and coordination with partners​

The Del Norte Prescribed Burn Association brings community members, landowners, and experienced practitioners together to conduct safe, carefully planned prescribed burns

Activities and assignments will depend on each participant’s experience, comfort level, and the needs of the burn
