Smith to Klamath provides a shared framework for coordinating community protection, forest health, critical infrastructure, and strategic treatments across the landscape. By planning this work together, individual projects can reinforce one another and contribute to a stronger, more resilient Del Norte County.

The Del Norte Fire Safe Council and its partners are already advancing wildfire resilience work in Rock Creek, Boulder Creek, Gasquet, Hiouchi, Low Divide, and the Smith River corridor. Smith to Klamath builds on that foundation by connecting local, Tribal, state, federal, and private efforts across ownership boundaries.
Depending on local conditions and project-level planning, this connected network may include community protection zones, shaded fuel breaks, forest-health thinning, prescribed and cultural fire, defensible space, and strategic fire-access and control features.

Smith to Klamath is not a single project or a one-time treatment. It is a long-term approach to coordinating priorities, partnerships, funding, and work on the ground.

The goal is to create safer conditions for residents and firefighters, strengthen the resilience of transportation and power infrastructure, support healthier forests, and build the local capacity needed for Del Norte County to live and thrive with wildfire.
