Resident and Property Services

Our mission at the Del Norte Fire Safe Council is to provide our county with the knowledge and resources to adapt to our current fire regime.

We provide free Home Assessments, Wildfire Education, and Property Consulting to assist homeowners and property owners in creating more fire-resilient properties. We also have programs to assist property owners with Defensible Space, Fuel Breaks, Forest Health, and Prescribed Burning.  We work with property owners by creating a plan that meets their budget and ability and raising funding to assist where possible.

For more information or to sign up for any of our programs, visit our wildfire mitigation sign-up page.

Together, we can work to adapt Del Norte County to a fire-safe and fire-resilient landscape.

We specializes in working with homeowners to create and maintain buffer zones around properties to enhance their resilience against wildfires. This service typically involves the removal of flammable vegetation and debris, strategic pruning of trees, and the replacement of highly combustible plants with fire-resistant species. We usually start with a Home Assessment and talk with the owner individually, considering local vegetation, terrain, and climatic conditions to design a tailored mitigation strategy. The service aims to reduce the intensity and spread of potential fires near homes and buildings, thereby increasing the chances of structure survival during wildfire events. This proactive approach not only safeguards properties but also assists in the safer deployment of firefighting resources during emergencies.

Throughout the year, we are pleased to offer complimentary chipping services to the communities within Del Norte. This convenient service allows you to reduce hazardous fuels on your property at your own pace, saving you a trip to the dump. While the resulting chips must remain on site, they can be wonderfully repurposed for gardening, mulching, or landscaping projects. Not only do these chips enhance your outdoor space, but they are also much less flammable than the pile of limbs they once were. Take advantage of this great opportunity to keep your property safe and aesthetically pleasing!

Shaded fuels breaks and fuel reduction for forest health focuses on managing and improving forest ecosystems to mitigate wildfire risks to homes and property, plus enhance environmental resilience. This includes thinning overstocked stands of trees, removing dead or dying trees, and clearing underbrush that serves as potential wildfire fuel. Additionally, it employs controlled burns strategically to manage vegetation healthily and sustainably. The goal is to create healthier, more spaced-out trees that can better resist pests, diseases, and fires. By promoting a more diverse and vigorous forest, this service not only reduces the severity of wildfires but also supports biodiversity, improves watershed health, and enhances carbon sequestration, contributing to the overall stability and sustainability of forest environments.
